Amalgam to model RUSH cars at 1:8 scale – McLaren M23D – Ferrari 312 T2

May 7th, 2013

Director Ron Howard’s RUSH movie is set against the sexy, glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing in the 1970s. Based on the true story of a great sporting rivalry between handsome English playboy James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth), and his methodical, brilliant opponent Niki Lauda, (Daniel Bruhl). The story follows their distinctly different personal styles on and off the track and the astonishing 1976 season in which both drivers were willing to risk everything to become world champion in a sport with no margin for error.

Their rivalry and friendship was legendary, of Hunt, Lauda says “For me, James Hunt has been the most charismatic personality that ever existed in Formula One.”

We are producing the Hunt and Lauda F1 cars at 1:8 scale – the Ferrari 312 T2, chassis number 026 driven by Niki Lauda during the 1976 season and the McLaren M23D driven by the 1976 World Champion James Hunt.

Unveiling the Team Lotus 38/1

January 24th, 2013

Amalgam Fine Model Cars unveilied their superb new 1:8 scale model of the 1965 Indy 500 winning Team Lotus Ford type 38/1 on Thursday 10th January 2013 at a champagne reception hosted by Clive Chapman and Classic Team Lotus at Autosport International at the NEC in Birmingham. The unveiling took place on the Classic Team Lotus stand at 4.30pm, with many accredited media representatives in attendance.

This iconic race car model has been nearly two years in the making and has indeed been a labour of love for the dedicated model making team at Amalgam.

Creating a 1:8 scale replica of the 38 was originally proposed to Amalgam by Jeremy Pierson who first joined Lotus as an eager youth back in 1965 and is still with Classic Team Lotus handling licensing. Jeremy’s enthusiasm for the project was echoed by Clive Chapman and all involved – including The Henry Ford – agreed this was a model that Amalgam needed to make.

In terms of this model build, the Lotus Ford type 38/1 posed all the same challenges that any of the open wheel racers of that period pose, chiefly the exposed nature of the mechanical parts of the car which demand precise detailing as nothing is hidden. We are totally committed to accuracy and precision in the detail of each car as it was on a day or at an event, and the 1:8 scale we work at is generous and capable of delivering every detail and nuance, allowing us to create an exact and authentic scale replica of the original car on race day.

The finished Lotus Ford 38/1 model has removable covers, allowing full access to the incredible detailing of the Ford quad-cam V8, the spectacular ‘spaghetti’ exhausts and the dramatically off-set suspension.

Classic Team Lotus has been an enthusiastic and supremely knowledgeable partner throughout the development of this very special model, with Clive Chapman himself overseeing the approval process at every stage.

Ralph Lauren Event – Americana Manhasset Concours d’Elegance – October 2012

October 24th, 2012

Americana Manhasset is the premier luxury shopping destination on Long Island’s North Shore, and Amalgam Fine Model Cars were proud to be a part of its prestigious Concours d’Elegance Event held in October 2012.

A selection of Amalgam Ralph Lauren models were featured in the Manhasset Ralph Lauren store for the duration of the event.

Models featured included a Bugatti 57SC, Ferraris 250 LM and 250 GTO and Jaguars XK120 and D-type.

To support the event, the store hosted an early morning breakfast session and Amalgam’s New Media Manager Jon Mills conducted a public Q&A talk with Brett Berk from Vanity Fair. Brett is a popular Vanity Fair writer covering cars, politics, and pop culture and this was a great opportunity for Amalgam to talk about their relationship with Ralph Lauren, and explain to visitors about the fine craftsmanship that goes into creating an Amalgam model.

Throughout the day, the store received many visitors and there was much interest in the Amalgam models on display, particularly the stunning Bugatti 57SC which was reserved for sale by one visitor. The Amalgam team were on hand to talk to interested customers.

Amalgam’s Mark Benson set up a model build demonstration alongside our display parts board showing the number of components used in a 1:8 scale model. This also attracted much attention and became a great topic for conversation and debate amongst visitors.

Whilst in New York Amalgam also visited the Manhattan Ralph Lauren store, and staff training about the models was undertaken at both stores. Manhattan store Manager Maki McCoy was excited about the new models on route to New York and was very positive about achieving good sales over the Christmas holiday period.

The new models include The Mercedes Benz SSK Count Trossi, Bugatti Type 59 Grand Prix, Mercedes Benz 300SL Gullwing Coupe, Bentley Blower and Jaguar XKSS.

The whole trip was very positive for Amalgam and the experience has been invaluable to carry forward for future Ralph Lauren Events around the world.
